He claimed that he made the decision to remain in the job despite numerous calls for him to quit. Many people believe that the accusations against him are politically motivated. They are intended to weaken Jordan’s fragile democratic system. Many of those who believe that the accusations are motivated by politics base their opinions on the fact that Makhsoos is a member of the minority National Guard that is protecting the regime. Many view the Gambling Commission, in addition to this accusation as a huge business lobby group trying to encourage Jordanian casinos as well as create its own industry.

Many locals I spoke with were not interested in politics and focused instead on their displeasure with Makhsoos, and the way the Gaming Commission was run. One resident shared that she was adamant about her dislike for Makhsoos, claiming that he would sneak into her hotel room when she was at the casino and take money from her. Another said that before he took her money the Gaming Commission was allowing her to pay him in cash. They believe all the allegations against Makhsoos to be true However, they are scared of what they could become. In the same way, they’ll remain silent and allow the Gaming Commission to do whatever it wants.

The current situation in Jordan is making life difficult for those who manage the country’s casinos. They face serious threats from Al Qaeda-linked Islamic Party members and other groups that are believed to be linked to Osama bin Laden. Anybody who is associated with the gambling industry in Jordan is also in danger. The tourism industry is going to suffer and along with it, the livelihoods and jobs of the people in Jordan.

There are also worries about the future of the current Jordanian slot machines. Most of these casinos are run by foreign companies, including those from India and Ireland. They operate from hotels or gambling casinos. A majority of these casinos are not affiliated with the Al Qaeda-linked groups or the Jordan Lottery Commission.

These illegal casinos and their associates have taken control of many motels and hotels in the country’s gambling and slot machine areas. They are charging huge fees from patrons and there is little or no regulation of their operation. This allows an illegal industry to manage one of the biggest industries in the nation. This is causing millions of dollars in tax revenue to be lost each year to the government as well as the private sector and the indigenous American gaming communities.
